House Fire On Lyn Road

Cal Fire says a neighbor called to report a house on fire on Lyn Road around 9:15 Saturday morning.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire by 9:30 am.

The fire caused $30,000 in damage.

The cause is under investigation.

Peoples’ Self-Help planning benefit

NIPOMO-Peoples’ Self-Help Housing will celebrate its 40th anniversary honor individuals and businesses for their contributions and raise funds for its Youth Education Programs at a special event Saturday, Oct. 23, in Nipomo.

Nipomo Teen Has 114 Entries At County Fair

When it comes to the Santa Barbara County Fair, there's one young lady who has made quite a reputation for herself with her passionate involvement, having more than a hundred entries of farm animals and art.

"That's how everyone knows me, 'Are you the girl with 114 entries?' And I say 'Yeah!'" said 18-year-old Jacqueline Higa, of Nipomo FFA.

She could be the busiest FFA member at the Santa Barbara County Fair, tending to all 114 animal and art entries.

"I have chickens, turkeys, pigeons, guinea pigs, pigs," said Higa.

She also raises goats, and rabbits.

Tobacco Sting in Unincorporated SLO County

NIPOMO-The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department, in cooperation with the Public Health Department San Luis Obispo County Tobacco Control Program, enlisted the help of a local teen who attempted to purchase tobacco at 11 locations in the County of San Luis Obispo.  Clerks at 2 of the 11 stores sold tobacco to the underage decoy.
In the ongoing effort to reduce youth access to tobacco, periodic checks of this type are conducted in cities and unincorporated areas throughout the county.  The County of San Luis Obispo Tobacco Retail Licensing Ordinance is set to help protect youth from starting a lifetime tobacco addiction and deadly habit.  
Tobacco retailers have been required to purchase a license in order to sell tobacco products in the unincorporated areas of the County.  Under Penal Code 308(a), it is illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone under the age of 18.  Failure to comply with the laws will result in a gradual series of penalti

DANA Hosts Talk On Native Americans

The Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos will present the second in a series of Saturday talks on Saturday, July 17th.

John Johnson, Santa Barbara Natural History Museum anthropology curator, will speak about the Native Americans who once lived in Nipomo. 

He will also reveal some of the mysteries surrounding the Dana Rancho. 

The talk, titled "The Mystery of Nipomo's Native American Inhabitants: Who were they and what happened to them?", is free and begins at 1:00 pm. 

The Dana Adobe is located at 671 S. Oakglen in Nipomo.

Deadly Crash On Oso Flaco Lake Road

Investigators say alcohol may be to blame for a crash that killed a Santa Maria man Sunday afternoon.

It happened around 3:30 PM on Oso Flaco Lake Road.

Officers say the man lost control of his pickup, rolled down an embankment and was thrown from his truck.

The man was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Beer cans were found at the scene of the accident.

Fire Damages Amado Street Home

Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire at a home in Nipomo Friday morning.

It broke out just before 2:45 AM at the home on Amado Street, just off South Oakglen Avenue.

Firefighters say it was a small fire at the back of the home.

The two people inside were able to get out safely.

The red cross is now helping them.

Damage is estimated at $75,000-$100,000.

The Nipomo Titans Youth Football League will conduct a pizza fest/social as part of their football player and cheerleader registration; July 10th from 11am to 4pm at the Pi-Hole-Pizzeria in the Adobe Plaza in Nipomo.
